Anyway, if any of my readers still visit (probably to use the links, if anything,) I will be changing formats within the next week. My blawgging days are done, mostly because the work, although fascinating to me while there, is painfully boring to narrate. If you want to read about my "exciting" life, check out my myspace link in the link section. As for "Stay Classy", the plan is to resurrect an idea from the college days. I've been putting in more time on the MySpace page (see the link at the top of the "Blogs I Recommend" section,) which has severly curtailed my efforts here. I have a pretty good idea of the theme, but will wait to debut until after the 1st.

On a side note, I will be back in Omaha for the weekend, and I have purchased my tickets for the wedding in Cleveland next month. I guess I will face his wrath as early as possible, as to make the rest of the day more tolerable.

Anyway, the heat here is borderline unbearable currently, as the expected high for tomorrow is well above my natural body temperature. Baseball has entered the dog days, all other major professional and college sports are on hiatus, and we have no more World Cup soccer. At least we are less than 2 months (see the title) until the first college football games of the 2006 season. As I was "diligently working" this morning (alright, I was getting my Nebraska recruting fix,) I reflected on what I was doing a year ago at that time. Generally speaking, I was rather determinedly studying Con Law or Property or some other gawd-awful subject.

As I thought more deeply about what I would have been covering in class this exact morning, I realized I most likely would have been sleeping. I had decided by late June that the 8:30 class at Creighton was not doing it for me, and began to attend the evening session. It seriously affected my scoial life, but that was probably a good thing at that point in the game.

So to all of you bar-takers, here is your blessing or curse, depending on your mental state: at this time next month, you will all be done with the bar!

Turn of events

The Royals followed up Friday night's crapfest with a series win over the Brewers, making it 3 series wins in a row. Guess I'll be following Holland the rest of the way. I've liked them since 1998, and it's been a while since we've seen them (they failed to advance to the final in '02.)

Tomorrow should be a great day, other than the work portion. My boss called from Houston today to tell me that we need a synopsis of the filings on an Ex Parte issue currently before the STB. That and a few other tidbits should keep me occupied until 5, when I can head over to the Quaff (a downtown KC bar) for a few brews before the Royals game tomorrow. As an added bonus, the boys in blue are in the midst of a season-high 4 game win streak. Watch out, Tribe, here come the Royals!

My elusive goal

I'm having yet another sleepless night. Going along with my new concept of committing to KC, I decided to bring a more pleasant attitude to the office each day. It must have been pretty strong, because my boss called me into his office TWICE to tell me how much he appreciated my "new" outlook at the office. For the first time in a while, I'm not scared when the boss calls me in to talk...

In other news, the Cornhusker baseball team placed themselves firmly behind the 8 ball in regional play today by losing to Manhattan at home this afternoon. Friday night I went to dinner and a movie (X-Men) with my brother and sister-in-law. Both dinner and the movie didn't reach their potential. Yesterday started with breakfast at one of my favorite greasy spoon and the chance to see Nebraska knock Texas out of the Big 12 baseball championship. I ended the night going to a piano bar (actually a sports bar, but in a room set aside for dueling pianos.)

One of the main threads of the weekend concerned a friend trying to play matchmaker for me. This has forced me to determine what exactly I'm looking for in a woman. Am I shallow for requiring a certain level of physical attraction? On a related note, what level of physical beauty is out of my league? Do my answers to the first 2 questions eliminate most, if not all, of the women that have the other attributes I'm looking for (intellectual, great sense of humor, sports fan...)?

Anyway, the rest of the long weekend should be pretty tame. I'm spending most of my time with the fam before driving back south tomorrow afternoon. Enjoy the rest of your weekends!

Getting back on track

I apologize for the time away. I had my last time out of town for training in the midst of my time away from the blog. Some of the highlights from the down time:

- Taking in another game in what looks to be a truly historic season of losing for the Royals
- Starting some new assignments at work which lead me to get to the office before 7 each morning
- Letting my apartment go to the point that I can't find some bills that need to be paid shortly
- Seeing my cubicle 2 straight weekends
- Spending a night in Pittsburg, KS

Actually, none of that sounds particularly exciting. There are a lot of reasons behind the decision, but regardless, I am excited to actually be able to take advantage of my summer. I will hopefully begin this with at least one game at the "K" next week when my Tigers come into town.

I don't usually talk too much about TV here, but I am a bit down about the end of the season for my favorite shows. I watched the last episode of "How I Met Your Mother" tonight, and I'll really miss it until September. It might be the best new show I've started watching since Smallville (I know, I'm a geek.)

Final thought: I've got the Cavs-Pistons game on in the background. When did teams decide the instrumental from the beginning of "Top Gun" was an option during games. I also heard it during the Nebraska-Texas baseball series this spring. First, the wedding I am planning to attend in Cleveland is a week earlier than anticipated. Thankfully, I had not purchased tickets yet. Additionally, the bachelor party for the groom in said wedding was also set today. The event will fall on one of two weekends. These are: (1) the weekend before I take the Missouri bar; or (2)the prior weekend. As much as I love scheduling things like this close to the bar (see Barnes Wedding - July 2005,) I think the compressed study schedule caused by my current employment will put the kibosh on my attendance.

Otherwise, have a GREAT Friday!

Enjoying the Triangle

I'm in Cary, NC currently, in the heart of what the locals call "the Triangle". Here's a quick timeline of the last 30 or so hours:

Friday -
5:30 AM: Alarm goes off in Shreveport, waking me after maybe 5 hours of sleep
6:30: Arrive at our office in Shreveport for the last day of field training
2:30 PM: Leave the office for the airport
3:15: Check in for my 4:25 flight which, after a stop in Memphis, should put me in KC around 8
4:30: Leave Shreveport
5:30: Arrive in Memphis without a seat assignment
5:50: Get to gate and let gate agent know that I'm willing to be bumped for compensation. She gives me my seat assignment.
6:20: At gate, hear announcement that our flight attendants are running late
6:35: Board plane
6:50: While backing away from gate, hear engine sputter
7:00: Head back to gate
7:10: Informed repairs will be made and we should leave in "about 20 minutes"
8:30: Told repairs are "almost finished" and that we should test the engine in "10 minutes or so"
9:05: Engine test fails
9:20: Captain tells us we will be moving to another plane, which originally was the plane that was to go to KC
9:50: Finally leave Memphis
11:15: Arrive in KC
11:25: Wait for luggage, baggage carousel breaks down. We move to another

Saturday:
12:20 AM: Arrive at apartment and turn on work phone. Instantly get notification of 2 messages
12:25: Listen to messages. I am told that I should report to work on Saturday at 7 AM.
12:30: Leave message for supervising co-worker, informing him I will not be in before 8
1:15: Pass out
7:40: Alarm goes off
8:00: Arrive at office

I'm not trying to complain, but I would have appreciated a little more compromise. The co-worker told me this morning that he needed to spend time with his family, which meant he had to leave the office by 9. I have no problem working on Saturdays, but I always thought Saturdays were supposed to start later, not earlier than the rest of the week. Anyway, I'm off to grab some z's before I get some more work done.

Just one more day...

I'm just one day away from the finish of my training time on the road. You would think these lessons would have been learned last spring with my Nebraska app, but for some reason they didn't stick. Anyway, here are some of the more annoying points in the process this spring:

- I really wish I had paid that speeding ticket back in 2000 timely. Not doing so started a series of events which unfortunately forces me to include a disposition of my court proceedings from Novemebr of that year.
- Why would bar examiners use a format which does not allow applicants to save e-copies of their paperwork?
- Can a price be placed on finishing your bar application early? Apparently so.
- Why does it matter where I worked prior to law school?
- What genius decided that Jefferson City was the logical place to put a state capital?

I'm off to Shreveport again today for the last segment of my training program, thank goodness.
Have a great Monday!

Back at it

After a busy couple of weeks at work and some self-evaluation, I have decided to come back to the blog. If I get a chance, I'll get a review of the trip up later this weekend.

Ballpark Review: The Juice Box

I attended my first game of the 2006 season last night to see the Astros play the Marlins at Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston. Some observations:
- Houston baseball fans are starved for winning. This can be seen in the weeklong celebration surrounding the 2005 NL Championship won by the club. George Steinbrenner celebrates AL Championships by firing assorted coaches. The Astros spend a week to raise the pennant, hand out championship rings, and give away assorted trinkets to the fans. Fans were lined up in LONG lines to get their replica rings last night.
- One of the biggest cheers came when Roger Clemens received his ring. Two thoughts came to mind: (1) Will he cherish this league championship ring as much as his 1986 edition? and (2) If Bill Simmons had witnessed the ovation given to Clemens, would he have spontaneously combusted?
- Vince Young through out the first pitch. He is one popular dude here in Texas. Of course, if you single-handedly won the only title won by a major Texas team this millenium, you might have a few fans as well. (BTW, Baylor womens' basketball doesn't count, and I don't think NCAA mens' baseball is a major sport, as much as I enjoy it.)

On to the ballpark review:
Design - The park comes with a retractable roof, and the northerner in me really would have appreciated it closed early in the game would have liked it closed, as it was about 90 degrees with 120% humidity at first pitch. The concourses could have been a bit bigger, since there seemed to be a considerable amount of bottlenecks where traffic just stopped. They tried to incorporate a railroad theme into the park as it is on the site of the former Union Station. Being a railroader, I did appreciate that. I like some of the field's quirks, like the sloping centerfield, and the train over the outfield fence, but the park could use some more foul territory.
Food/Drink - Beers were $7 a pop, which wouldn't be that bad, except the vendors didn't have the right change at the beginning of the game. The dog was great, while the nachos were stale. I also got a soda to get the souvenir cup, which was a leftover from the series last fall (guess they ordered thinking they wouldn't get swept.)
Ambience - Considering how bad the home team got beat (3-0 before they first got to bat, 10-0 after 5 innings,) the crowd really stayed into the games. As one of my colleagues from the area said, "We're (The 'Stros) a second-half team anyway."

Overall - Houston has done much to build their version of the new ballpark that we see throughout the country. However, it seemed cramped, and outside of the fan involvement in a blowout, nothing really stuck out as unique. Of the new parks I've visited, it ranks 3rd of 3, behind Comerica in Detroit and Jacobs Field in Cleveland.

Next up - "The K"

Starting the tour again

I'm just done with the first day of training here in Houston. I found out that I'll be here through Wednesday, which is great, because it gives me a chance to see a game at Minute Maid while I'm in town with an old friend from school. Like many of you out there, I have a goal to visit every major league stadium to see a game. Prior to this season, I've been to games at Comerica Park (Tigers), Kaufmann Stadium (Royals), Jacobs Field (Indians), and Wrigley (duh). I've also visited 4 stadia (the real plural of "stadium") that have been demolished: the Kingdome (Mariners), old Busch (Cardinals), Milwaukee County (Brewers), and Veterans (Phillies). Starting with Minute Maid, I'm adding a twist. I bought a scorebook last week, and I plan on keeping score at least once at every park. I should have 2 down by the end of the week (FLA-HOU tomorrow, CWS-KC Saturday) and plan to visit up to 3 more this season (New Busch in STL, the Jake again in CLE, and possibly RFK in DC.)

Today's pick: UCLA makes it a dozen with a victory over Florida tonight.

Deep in the heart...

I'm in The Woodlands, TX tonight on the eve of leg 4 of 5 of my training program. Some initial observations:

- I don't know about the rest of the year, but early April is absolutely gorgeous here in the greater Houston area. Nothing like high 70's at 7:30 at night.
- Why do I have to watch the women's Final Four on ESPN when baseball is opening its season?

I hope 2 equals "some". The molars are still a bit sore, but I should be close to 100% for the trip to Houston on Sunday.

In other news, we're less than a week away from the end of college basketball season, which means the most boring four months in sports are almost upon us. I love baseball live, but watching it on TV is just about unbearable. I guess it's time to count the days until fall football practice starts.

Finally, for the ones of readers back in Omaha, I'll be back in Nebraska for a long Easter weekend, which might include:
- The Nebraska spring football game
- Seeing the new Horseshoe in CB
- Hanging with the bro
- At least one night out on the town

For the rest of you, you'll hear from me again this weekend.

Doped up and frustrated

Short post tonight. The boys in crimson and black will make their inaugural appearance in the NCAA DI hockey tournament this Friday against Boston University in Worcester on the U. I get into KCI Airport around 5:30 Friday. KCI is 30 minutes from my apartment, and therefore 30 minutes closer to Omaha. I haven't seen my brother at length since January, and one of my friends celebrates her birthday Saturday. On the other hand, I haven't spent a St. Partick's Day in KC yet, and staying in town allows me to catch more basketball and celebrate Corn Dog Day. I think I'm currently leaning toward making the trip north, but some decisions by others could sway the decision back south.

In lieu of Top 5 tomorrow, I will post the NCAA picks. These teams are the ones I have learned to hate the most, and some of the definitive moments of my feelings toward these teams.

1. The University of Miami (Da You): I've been a Nebraska fan since I can remember, and during my formative years as a fan, the Canes had the Huskers' number. Some of the most painful losses of my early years were devastating Orange Bowl losses to Miami, starting with Miami's upset of an undefeated Nebraska team in the 1984 edition. (Most defining moment: Coach Osborne finally getting over his 0-fer in national championship games by beating the Canes in the Orange Bowl following the 1994 season)

2. The University of Texas: My hatred of the Horns is recent, coinciding with the expansion of the Big 8 to the Big 12 following the 1995 season. It started with UT's upset of the Huskers in the inaugural Big 12 title game in 1996, thereby denying Nebraska a chance to win a third straight national title. (Most defining moment: Jamaal Lord throwing an interception in the 2002 game, which ended a potential game-winning drive and led to Nebraska first non-winning season since 1962.)

3. The University of Michigan (scUM): Origins of this animosity can be found in the split national title of 1997. It was accentuated by UNO's entrance into the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, long dominated by the weasels. The final boost came when I moved to Toledo in 2002 and lived amongst the condescending "subway alumni"* for three years. (Most defining moment(s): 2000 CCHA seminfinal win of 7-4 by UNO against Michigan, 2005 Alamo Bowl)

4. Atlanta Braves: Forget the offensive mascot and players like Chipper and Lonnie. Who decided that the Braves were "America's Team", and why was I subjected to watching them every night?? The Mets were the first pro team I rooted for, and for most of the mid-to-late-1990's, the Braves were the roadblock keeping the Mets from postseason success. (Most defining moment: Kenny Rogers walking home the series-clinching win in Game 6 of the 1999 NLCS.)

5. Dallas Cowboys: This hatred probably has come about not because of the team's fortunes, but because of the team's "fans", possibly the biggest bandwagon fans ever. Where were you during the 1989 season, when the team went 1-15? Every Cowboy fan will probably say they supported the team, but I would pin the percentage of 1993 Cowboys fans who were around in 1989 at around 10% max. The album is very upbeat, with quick-hitting songs, and really is a good point to jump in later BFF albums.

2. Surfer Rosa, The Pixies: Originally released in 1988, this offering is probably the best example of the sound that fueled the alt-rock movement of the 1990's. Of course, it is also extremely fun.

3. Discovery, Daft Punk: This album was all over commercials when it came out, but I had already experienced the "band" from Homework, their first album. A lot of well-known single-artist electronic music CDs can contain some clunkers (see the Venga Boys, Eiffel 65, etc.), but this CD can be listened to from beginning to end.

4. Franz Ferdinand, Franz Ferdinand: Alright, most of you have heard at least one song from the album ("Take Me Out"), and might not have given the album a second chance. Give it that chance. Every song is catchy, and the album will be hard to move out of your regular rotation.

5. Ibiza Sessions 1, Various Artists: A very chill dance mix. Most of my older compilation albums have been retired, but this album from 2000 holds its own against the newer mixes I've made myself.

I hope you check one or most of these albums out.

Top Fives

I'm in the midst of retooling the blog, and one of the things I'm planning on adding is a weekly Top 5 [fill in the blank]. After some thought, I came up with my 5 factors for creating a blog I like to read (not inclusive:)

1. Reflections from 2Ls and 3Ls in law school: Since I've been out less than a year, these blogs have a somewhat nostalgic quality for me, and that quality might grow as I get farther away from school.

2. People who don't give a crap: Of course, I can't be sure these people aren't trying to give off this particular vibe to make their blogs more readable, but then again, I've known enough people who geniunely don't give a rat's turd what others care about them that these blogs remain somewhat believable.

3. Young lawyers actually practicing: Although I'm using the skills gleaned from 2 1/2 years of coasting through law school (I went for 3, but really feel I only gave it my all 2nd semester of 1L,) I don't always feel like I'm out there practicing, especially since I worked for a city prosecutor's office 2nd summer. As a result, I enjoy reading about younger attorneys getting their hands dirty.

4. Sports-related blogs: I'm a sports junkie and always have been. I do think the type of sports blog I read needs to change, but I frankly find most of what I have linked now boring.

5. Friends' blogs: Most of my longer-term friends live in other cities at this point, so this is a lazier way for me to keep up with them.

These are some of the things I look for in blogs I read. Any suggestions out there that might fit into these categories? I'll do my best to check out any recommendations. On a similar note, what do my ones of readers look for in blogs? I'm not going to go James Frey to draw in readers, but I'd love to know what people enjoy reading or find boring. Thanks for any feedback in advance.

For those interested, I'll be back in Omaha this weekend to watch the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha hopefully destroy the Michigan Weasels...

It was everything I hoped it could be

It's been an extremely relaxed day today. After some stuff at the yard here tomorrow, I'll be heading back home for what will hopefully be a restful weekend of laundry and the Olympics. I don't know about you, but the Olympics are in my top 5 for events to watch. If networks showed the U.S. competing against other countries in competitive ironing, I might be suckered into watching it. I will miss having the CBC broadcast, though. I was still living in Toledo during the 2004 Games, and unlike the "networks of NBC", CBC actually shows everything LIVE!!! What a concept!! Showing the events as they happen, instead of waiting for prime time...

2 Days Left

I passed the halfway point of my 1st week of field work today. As I noted before, I had a tour of a brewery planned for the weekend. It was part of a weekend-long time spent with some friends from my Omaha high school days. 2 guys came down from Omaha and another flew in from Memphis (his parents live here now). We planned to meet for lunch before the tour. I walked into the restaurant about 12:45 yesterday afternoon, and much to my surprise, my friend Ian was sitting there. Ian lives out in North Carolina now, and I hadn't seen him since his wedding last July (the weekend before the bar, for those playing at home.) I probably talk to Ian more than anyone else outside my family. It seems that he had talked to his brother (one of the guys from Omaha), and decided last Saturday to fly in. I was speechless when I saw him, and those that know me well know that is a very rare occurence. Anyway, it was a great weekend. There is truly nothing like hanging out with old friends and having it be like you were 17 all over again.

On a different note, I checked out a new church today. Here's a link to their site. I'm pretty sure I'll be heading back once I'm back in town. I'm still on for Shreveport. I fly out at 8:40 next Sunday morning. There were later flights, but if I took one of those, I might miss the first 2-3 hours of the Super Bowl pregame show. I still can't see how Detroit got the game. Why do I still have them? It's been almost 4 years since I had good insurance and the wisdom teeth really started bothering me about 3 years ago. If all goes according to plan, I should have them removed on the 17th, thereby ruining a long weekend (I have Presidents' Day off.) I also found out popcorn and cereal are out of the diet until after the surgery. If nothing else, I'll get real used to eating yogurt on a daily basis.

On a good note, I'm touring Boulevard Brewery this Saturday. Here's some of the highlights and lowlights.

Highlights:
1. Getting to know the other people in the program: Being relatively new to the city, it's nice to finally hang out with some people in a somewhat social environment.
2. Free meals: I had an awesome filet last night and nothing beats free alcohol courtesy of the company.
3. Long lunches: Since we are the first through this program, the timing is a bit off. As a result, we've had long periods of dead time, which have been somewhat filled by lunches of 1 1/2 hours or more.

Lowlights:
1. 2/3 of a day going over the program's handbook: Each one of us has at least a bachelors degree. Can't we read the material on our own time?
2. The employment discrimination presentation: I studied this subject during an entire semester of law school. Trust me, a half-hour video isn't going to teach me anything I don't already know.
3. Management "coaching": We had not one but two modules on how we should "coach" our employees (not that any of us have any at this point.)

I leave for Shreveport on February 5.

End of Saturday football

Yesterday was the last Saturday that football will be on until August. Oklahoma was ranked as high as #12 coming into the game, with a win over Alabama and a close loss at undefeated Villanova. Teams, should be able to defend their home court in conference play, and this win will hopefully propel Nebraska to an NCAA tournament appearance. I figure they will need to go at least 9-7 in conference with at least one win in the Big 12 tournament to advance, especially considering the embarrassing non-conference strength of schedule they bring into conference season.

In other Big 12 news, Kansas dropped the hammer on Kentucky at home today, giving Tubby Smith his worst loss as Kentucky coach...

BBQ Review 2

Location: Fiorella's Jack Stack - Freight House
Meal: Hatfield Sandwich and Fries
Comments: This visit was a business lunch with one of my business unit's biggest clients. The location is just north of Union Station in downtown Kansas City. The building is a former warehouse or something and has a great vibe. As noted, I had the Hatfield sandwich, allows you to choose 2 varieties of sliced smoked meat on a French roll. As always, one of the meats was brisket, with the other being sausage. The brisket was tender and had a complex taste. The sausage was extra spicy. The sauce had great heat yet had a hint of sweetness.
Overall, I was really impressed with the food as well as the service. It's also the first game scheduled for the Huskers at this time. I still think there will be some additions to the slate of games, but I hate the fact the it will be 8 long months until I get my fix of college football again. A top 25 ranking at the end of the season will make the wait a little easier.

Meanwhile, work keeps getting busier. I was going to start the diet today, but a lunch invite by the boss to join the legal department for a bite through a wrench into that. Tomorrow will be the start...

Hang on, Sloopy...

Well, I just finished another 7 hours of football-watching in what will be the last multi-game session of this college football season. Some thoughts:

1. I enjoyed my first round of the Brent Musberger Drinking Game. We played an amended version for the Fiesta Bowl since we only had 3 participants. I blame the lack of participation on a Monday slate of bowl games.

2. The Big 10/11 really underperformed this year (2-4 record with the Orange Bowl still to be played) as did erstwhile BCS hopeful Oregon (lost in the Holiday Bowl to unranked and 7-4 Oklahoma).

3. The Big 12 North held their own, finishing 3-2, with at least 2 of the 3 victories coming from heavy underdogs.

4. Kansas City needs a bowl game. Hey, if Boise, Charlotte and Nashville can all host, so could KC.

I'm heading back home on my first vacation day from work tomorrow. Prediction for the Orange Bowl: Penn State big over Florida State in what I'm calling the Senior Bowl (150+ combined years of life between the 2 head coaches).

2006: The new 2005?

I'm in the middle of what should be my last trip to Omaha for a while. It's been a nice vacation. I've watched a lot of football (biggest surprise - Mizzou somehow coming back to beat South Carolina on Friday), seen a comeback by the Mavs, and celebrated the New Year with a few friends at a new place (here's a link, if you're interested.) I've got one more full day here. I need to get the ride in for service, since I've put WAY too many miles on it already and get my watch re-sized. After those errands, I should put in about 8 hours watching bowl games tomorrow (probably the most I'll watch sports in one day until the NCAA basketball tourney in March). I'll put up a final recap of the trip on Tuesday night. Anyway, here are the 5 bowls I'm most looking forward to (in no particular order):

1. GMAC Bowl (12/21/05): Toledo v. UTEP - The GMAC is always a high-scoring affair, and it helps that my alma mater is playing in the game. It will probably be the game I pay attention to most out of the pre-Alamo slate.
2. Alamo Bowl (12/28/05): Nebraska v. Michigan - The 1997 National Title, finally played out on the field! I think this might be one of my least-favorite pitches for a game. Still, the Wolverines and Cornhuskers are 2 of the most storied programs in college football, and their combined tradition trumps any game played on or before New Year's Day (see #4 for the winner for the bowl season's victor in this category). No one gives Nebraska a chance, which is just the way I like it.
3. Sun Bowl (12/30/05): Northwestern v. UCLA - This will probably be the most exciting game I'll miss (Friday at 1PM CST, thank you very much.) Both teams have explosive offenses, but have no clue how to play defense. I put the number on the game at 77.
4. Fiesta Bowl (1/2/06): Notre Dame v. Ohio State - TRADITION!!! These teams have a combined (1, 2, 3,....well, a lot) national championships, yet never seem to play each other even though they are in adjoining states. Of course, Tempe has been Columbus-South, as tOSU is playing their 3rd game there in 4 years.
5. Rose Bowl (1/4/06): USC v. Texas - Duh. These 2 teams have been ranked 1-2 all season and have outright disgusting talent. Will we see USC destroy another Big 12 "juggernaut" or will Texas finally stop the USC winning streak at 34 (which would keep USC tied with my Rockets in consecutive wins)?

Enjoy it now, because after the 4th, we have 8 1/2 long months to wait until we get to start over again...

Happy Holidays, Part II

Last night, I went to what I thought was going to be my business unit's holiday party at my VP's house. I was the first one there (I had later plans, so the earlier the better). The food smelled great, my boss got me a drink (Diet Coke, since I didn't want to embarrass myself) and we sat down to watch the end of the Chiefs game. As time rolled by, more people showed up, but they were all from the company's Law department. I probably should have assumed this would happen, since my boss moved down to Marketing from there. Anyway, I ended up being the youngest there by at least 7-9 years. The food was good, but it would have been nice to have someone else there close in age to me. Oh well, it was some good face time with the company's lawyers.

Anyway, it should be an easy week at work. We had a buffet-style lunch of ham and turkey for about 400 or so. All things considered, the lunch wasn't bad. We had a jazz quintet playing Christmas tunes. After about 15-20 minutes, the head honcho got up and said a few words. He talked about how this was the best year he had seen under his watch and listed off the accomplishments of the company. He then mentioned some of the people he had talked to at the company's holiday party. Wait a sec? Wasn't I attending the holiday function at this moment? For a minute or 2, I felt kind of pissed-off that we got this lunch during the day where the higher-ups probably had a finely-catered party with an open bar. This was diffused after one of my co-workers said, "Who would we talk to, anyway?" I then realized that I probably wouldn't want to talk to most of the VPs without a consdierable amount of alcohol, and at that point, my career probably couldn't afford that conversation.

My department has our party this weekend. She's a 2L, so most of the test anxiety I saw in her as a 1L had dissipated. Of course, she just had Torts II* left to take. Needless to say, if she's stressed out by this test, she probably has bigger things to worry about.

Anyway, the exam talk made me realize how much I have enjoyed this fall. There's no exams to study for, no papers to write, and most importantly, no stress about finding a job. Still, I have a flashback today while I was at church (yes, I have church on Monday, and no, I don't go everyday.) I was having some pizza with the guys in my small group and had 3 Diet Mt. Dews in the course of 45 minutes. Even if I'm not taking finals, I'm putting caffeine into my system like I am...

*Torts II is another way of saying "retaking Torts I". We talked a lot about "big tent" and "marginalization". Well, as I was looking for something to read on my flight home today, I stumbled upon "It's My Party, Too" by former NJ Governor and EPA Director Christine Todd Whitman. I don't know if I've read something in recent years which has come closer to articulating my political views. I enjoyed the book greatly, and encourage all moderates out there to give it a read. I've also added a link to her PAC to the page.

Back on the range

I'm back from a weekend in America's Armpit, otherwise known as Toledo, OH. Some thoughts from the trip:

1. Did you ever see the commercial where a guy in an Ohio State sweatshirt is making out with a woman in a Michigan T (or vice versa)? It's an ESPN commercial, and the tagline at the end is "If it wasn't for sports, this wouldn't be disgusting." I totally get that now. With all respect to Legally Blonde, my hatred for Michigan reached a new level this weekend. I'll just leave it at that.
2. Even with the Michigan hatred flowing, I have to give credit where credit is due. Their hockey fans might be some of the funniest ones I've seen. From "Dirty Mullet" and "Ugly Parents" to "It's all your fault" and singing along to "Living on a Prayer", I've never been more amused at a supporting event. The old barn they play at is pretty cool as well.
3. My Mavs still have a ways to go before they are the equal of the Weasels. I think the fans around me actually felt sorry for me.
4. I unequivocally do NOT miss Ohio (or at least Toledo). I didn't love the place when I lived there, and I like it less now. I need all my friends to relocate to other cities so I don't ever have to go back.
5. Duke is still Duke.
6. The Nebraska volleyball team is on a mission.
7. No one in Big 10/11 country thinks the Cornhuskers will be within 2 TDs of Michigan in the Alamo Bowl later this month.

I'm actually staying in town through the 23rd, so I should be posting updates fairly regularly, including:
- at least 1 more BBQ review (next up, Jack Stack)
- some more music
- a preview of the Alamo Bowl

See you then!

I'm trying something new. With a name like that, the food has a lot to live up to. Unfortunately, it didn't quite measure up. I had the brisket and sausage. Brisket can be unbelievable if done right, but the cooks left this in their cooking apparatus a bit too long. The meat was gray and had lost quite a bit of taste. The sausage wasn't bad, but the letdown on the brisket hurt the overall score. Additionally, the food is priced considerably higher than most of the restaurants in town. I probably would have been more disappointed had this not been the first stop on the review tour.

Overall Score: 4.5 out of 10

Next Review: Jack Stack Barbecue - Downtown

Back at it

Sorry for the time between posts. There's nothing like a little home-cooking and some time with old friends to recharge the batteries. Of course, I'll have that again next weekend in Ohio, but that's still a week away.

In other news, the Huskers are probably, as an entire athletic department, at the highest point in recent years. The volleyball team is #1 going into the postseason, the basketball team is still undefeated, and the football team is looking at a decent bowl game. Now if only my hockey team could play a bit more consistently.

I'll be back in town on Sunday, and will have more then. It might be different if I knew more people here or had some plans this weekend. Since I don't, work sounds like a nice diversion. This also is the last weekend I'll be here until the weekend of the 16th.

So, nothing new to report. I'll hopefully have something new later this week. At least my boys get to prepare for a bowl and will practice for another month.

Meanwhile, it has been a gorgeous day here in KC. The conversation made me think about what makes someone a friend, and how many of my acquaintances meet those standards. Do you know what qualifies someone as your "friend". I sometimes think the word is overused. Here are a few of the standards I use to define a friend:

1. They don't take your response of "I'm fine" as truth when you're not. You don't know why they can tell; they just can.

2. They hop in the car and drive multiple hours for no apparent reason to come see you.

3. They NEVER forget your birthday, even if you want to (if they say they're not good with dates, they're lying...)

4. They'll talk to you when you're hurting, especially when they have somewhere else to be.

Sorry for the somewhat sappy post. I just feel so lucky to have the friends I have, and I believe I can count them on two hands. Something less serious tomorrow. Go Rockets!!! I have really been waiting for these kind of temperatures for weeks. If nothing else, it gets me in the mood for the holidays. That's a good thing since I'm heading home for the family Thanksgiving festivities this weekend. This weekend also is the start of 4 out of 6 weekends when I'll be out of Kansas City. I can't say I miss the place incredibly. Even though I've been here a few weeks, I haven't made a lot of new friends, so the social life has been somewhat lacking. I spent the greater portion of my day reading. One of my bosses gave me a book on the industry a week ago, and I've really gotten into it since the woman I'm training with is gone this week. I received another book today on the labor statute governing the industry, which was pretty dry.

Of course, I also kind of got a sit down with one of the guys in my business group. It seems that internet usage of almost ANY kind is frowned upon at work. The HR policy statement I received in my "welcome to the company" packet said we were not supposed to abuse our internet privileges. I was told today this means NO personal usage whatever, even if you're taking lunch at your desk. I do understand we shouldn't spend a lot of time checking out personal websites (btw, the links on the main page are pretty much the scope of my surfing, along with Hotmail and my bank/financial info). My question is, was the delivery made becuase my colleague is watching out for me, or because someone from above doesn't want to get their hands dirty?

I guess I hope I'm busy from this point forward, because I don't know what else to do if I've finished my work for the day. Lord knows I couldn't go home early. Do any of you out there have these kinds of restrictions at work? If you violated some sort of unspoken "policy", how do you think your company would deal with it?

Vacation time

Quote of the Day: "Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me, heh - after that I sorta space out for an hour." "Space out?" "Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. Ron Livingston and Paul Willson, Office Space

Well, I had my first Office-Space-type day today. No, I didn't come in fifteen minutes late. I did, however, space out for some time this afternoon. The woman who has been training me is gone on a cruise this week. I was hoping that this would lead to me getting to see the type of work the rest of my business unit does. I was mistaken. I went into my VP's office today asking him to give me work (almost certainly the first time this has happened.) Instead, he asked me to continue documenting the processes my trainer uses to do her work. That would be a great idea, had we covered that material before she left. Unfortunately, we didn't, and so I have little left to document until she gets back. It looks like it will be another few days of spacing out while I keep asking for something else to do...

Hills and Valleys

Quote of the Day: "You look like a bunch of fifth grade sissies after a cat fight! You got anger, that's good you're gonna need it, you got aggression that's even better you're gonna need that, too. But any little two year old child can throw a fit! Football is about controlling that anger, harnessing that aggression into a team effort to achieve perfection!" Denzel Washington, Remember the Titans

Well, it was a good and bad day for my football squads today. On the bad front, my Cornhuskers let one of the last of their amazing streaks end today by losing to Kansas for the first time since 1968. On the other hand, my alma mater clinched a share of the North Central Conference title and most likely a first-round bye in the Division II playoffs which start next week. What can we take out of this? Well, it means I stay quiet about my affinity for Nebraska at work for another week, as the team has lost to Kansas and Missouri in the last 3 weeks. It also means the 'Huskers are still one win from bowl eligibility. Anyway, tomorrow should be better, as I'm probably favored in both of my big fantasy matchups of the day. I realize that I just don't want to do it. You know what I mean it sounds good and all but I just have to confront the fact that I really don't like the people I've been talking about helping out. Adam Goldberg, Dazed and Confused

Sorry I didn't get back to the blog last night. I was out picking up some things and got into the baseball game once I got home. Next thing I knew, It was 1:00 AM and I had to be at work in 6 1/2 hours. Anyway, I had my first experience with the Kansas DMV over lunch today. Surprisingly, it was filled with a lot of people that I'm not sure I want to share the road with (wait, that isn't surprising.) The process was rather quick, and I only spent 30 minutes in line that measured about 25 when I was at the end. Everything was going great until I was handed my license. I guess someone has decided that giving drivers their actual ID would take too long, so I got a printout of my license. I hope it works to get on the plane or to rent a car when I go back to Toledo in December for my visit.

I'm heading straight from work to my friend's parents' house for dinner tomorrow night, so the next update probably won't be up until Friday or Saturday. It's going to be a tough transition to the current work schedule. Anyway, here's the highlights of my first week in KC.

1. I finally got my DVR figured out Thursday night. It seems the genius installer gave me the wrong remote. It allowed me to change channels, but not to access my record list. After a trip south to the cable store, I got it figured out.

2. I've had the opportunity to sample a couple of different BBQ places here in KC. My first night here, I took my family to the McDonald's of KC BBQ, KC Masterpiece. I then had the chance to try Jack Stack Barbeque last Wednesday for lunch. I'll try to have a review of each later this week.

3. The Cornhuskers managed to suck as a team in their 41-24 loss to Missouri on Saturday. The team will have to go 3-1 in their last 4 games to meet my preseason prediction of 8-3.

Well, that's a quick update. We have a client in town, so the latter half of the day included 2 free meals and a tour of our facilities here in KC. Tomorrow, I get to ride down to Pittsburg with my work team, so it should be another long day. I'm not upset with this, because I'm really enjoying the job. I'm learning a ton, and all of it is new. I am definitely looking forward to the weekend. I should be able to write a bit more this weekend, including these topics:

- The Vikings' "pleasure" cruise
- Nebraska's chances of winning the Big 12 North
- Whether or not I've figured out my DVR yet
- BBQ reviews

Until then, stay classy...

Working like a dog

I just finished what looks to be my usual work shift at the new job, 7:30-5:30. It's a lot of hours, but I'm enjoying the work. I have so much to learn, but my boss is letting me learn at my own speed. I get the opportunity to travel to one of our shops in Pittsburg KS on Thursday. I should learn a lot. Anyway, that's all for now. Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime, so where's the motivation? And here's another thing, I have eight different bosses right now." "Eight?" "Eight, Bob. So that means when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled, that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired." Ron Livingston and Paul Wilson, Office Space

The last line of the above quote probably expresses perfectly why I am so happy today. Today is my last day at my temp job here in Omaha. As I've noted before, I did enjoy earning a bit of cash while manning a desk for a little over a month. I'd actually like to list the things I liked about the position (although some will need to be unsaid in order to preserve some decorum):

1. Internet access: This was probably the most important factor in keeping my sanity. It allowed me to prepare for interviews, search for other jobs, and otherwise kill time while waiting for 5:00 to arrive.
2. Location: I've been leaving on the east side of Omaha. My drive to work takes no more than 10 minutes, which is a huge bonus when determining how long I can stay in bed each morning (especially on mornings like today, when the temp in is the 40's).
3. Access to certain office features: I have really enjoyed having up-to-date software on the computer as well as somewhat unfettered access to the phone. Bravo!

Since I gave some kudos to the positions, I'd also like to list the worst things about the job (in no particular order):
1. No e-mail/fantasy access: What's the point in having internet access when you can't check your inbox or manage your 5 fantasy teams?
2. Undefined role: I'm sure I have a job title, and a description as well. However, it seems like this position is pretty grab-bag, since there really isn't enough work to justify paying a temp for 40+ hours of work a week.
3. Management oversight: I want to preface this by saying that one of my 1's of readers is in a management role overseeing me, and this is not an attack on him. With that behind us, I have not been in a position with less hands-on management ever. My primary manager (not the person alluded to) is rarely available for questions and has the tendency to send assignments my way with little to no instruction on what he wants to accomplish. As a result, any project he gives me probably takes me 2x longer to finish than it would had we fleshed out his goals beforehand. Additionally, I work very efficiently when proper deadlines are outlined. However, if I'm not given a deadline for finishing a project and find it menial, I will work at my leisure (but will still probably finish it quicker than most). This fact led to more strain being placed on one of my friendship than at any point in recent memory. The lesson I will take from that experience is this: if you can avoid it, never work under ANYONE with whom you have a prior relationship in which you are of relatively equal status. One or both of you will end up unhappy at some point.
4. Company design: This might be the biggie. I'm starting work at a large but nimble company on Monday. I'm excited for 2 reasons. One, the money and benefits are great. Two, and more importantly, I believe in what the company is trying to accomplish. My current employer is a monolith. It has diversified and expanded for years, and now is a bloated operation that can hire a slacker like me and never feel the effects of my slacking. Hell, there are probably hunderds of slackers like me here already, and will still be after I leave later today. Give me a company where every employee has to pull their weight, and I'll have a company on the rise.

I most likely will not be posting until at least Sunday, since I will be moving tomorrow and Saturday. Until next time, stay classy!!!

A wrench in the works

"What did you do? You turned it off!" "Turned off what? I just turned off the screen." "No, you didn't! You turned off the movie!" Rick Moranis and George Wyner, Spaceballs

There's nothing like infected spam sent to an entire company to crash a Outlook system and destroy a whole morning of productivity. That's exactly what happened here in the last 24 hours, when some genius "sent out" the "Bill Gates is tracking this e-mail chain and will give us major cash if we forward this out" message. Almost 6 hours after the start of my workday, I finally have unfettered access to Outlook.

Anyway, it's been a somewhat productive day personally. I set up my pickup time for the U-Haul tomorrow, got the message from the couch people telling me to expect a call in the next 2 days telling me when my couch will be delivered on Saturday, and deposited my next-to-last check from here. I'm looking forward to get the final pre-move work done tonight (laundry, cleaning, unhooking electronics, and more packing) so tomorrow can be as smooth as possible.

On a somewhat related note, it sucks trying to plan your own birthday functions. My birthday is this Saturday, and my family is trying to coordinate doing something in KC. My brother and sister-in-law will be at her parents outside of Topeka, and my parents are helping me move on Friday. Even with us being in such close proximity to one another, no one can decide on anything. I'm not big on getting tons of gifts or anything. I just hate spending my birthday alone. In this instance, solitude might be the best option. Matthew Broderick, Ferris Bueller's Day Off

I've been having an off-and-on discussion about Ferris Bueller's Day Off with one of my friends for the last couple of weeks. Mostly, it revolves around how much we like the movie and what price we would honestly pay for the DVD. I own it on VHS, which is a stop-gap solution at best, since I plan on ditching my last VCR once I buy a new TV sometime next year.

Anyway, as I look out on one of my last gray Omaha days (50 hours until I start moving into my place in KC), I was wondering what I would do on a Ferris Bueller-type "sick day". Most of us (myself included) would use a sick day to get better as well as recharge the ol' batteries. For argument's sake, let's say that you are not, in fact, sick. Here's the situation. You get one day off to do whatever you wish, as long as the day's activities are in one general location and fall within a 8:30-4:30 window (don't need to run into any co-workers when you're home "sick"). We'll review Ferris' day, so you can se what you're up against.

Planned Itinerary for Ferris:
- Sears Tower
- Stock Market
- Chicago Institute of Art
- Fancy lunch
- Cubs game
- Parade
- Time at pool

As you can see, Ferris and his entourage jammed quite a bit into a small window. What would you do? Here's my day:
City - NYC (I have lots of options, and don't need to worry about the Ferrari, since I won't drive into town)
Time of Year - April (Ideally, I'll be there opening day of the baseball season, since there should be a day game for the Mets)
Agenda -
8:30 - 9:45: Wall Street / NY Stock Exchange (See center of world commerce and watch the opening of the floor)
10:00 - 11:45: Metropolitan Museum of Art (Great museum)
12:00 - 12:45: Outside Shea (buy tickets, look for cheap Mets apparel)
1:00 - 3:45: Mets game (See Pedro open season with a great outing, leaving before inevitable bullpen meltdown)
4:00 - 4:30: See United Nations (nothing super important happens there, quick in and out)

There's my day. What's yours?

I'm finally done with the database.
